This month, we’re exploring three very different single malts that each bring something unique to the table; from sherry-soaked Highland peat, to Speyside fruit with a smoky twist, and even a bold red wine cask finish that packs a tangy punch. Let’s dive into the drams awaiting you.

Glendronach – Ode to the Embers
A few months ago we tasted Glendronach’s Ode to the Valley, it was very popular and I even scored it a high 94/100. This is a another member of the Ode collection, another new twist from the masters of sherried whisky, Glendronach’s Ode to the Embers takes us back to traditional malting methods where peat smoke played its part in shaping flavour. Matured in a combination of oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, this dram balances the distillery’s rich, fruity backbone with a soft wisp of smoke.
Nose: Sweet spiced fudge, candied nuts, cinnamon biscuits, and hints of marmalade wrapped in gentle smoke.
Palate: Sherried fruit, cooked apples, raisins, honeyed nuts, and delicate waves of peat with earthy oak.
Finish: Dark berries, smoked liquorice, cocoa, and a warming touch of ginger.
This is Highland elegance with just enough ember-glow smoke to keep you intrigued. A perfect fireside companion. Wonderfully sweet and as we start to exit the Summer and the nights start to get darker and cooler, this one really gets you into the Autumn mood. Another 94/100!

Dram Mor – Tullibardine 11 Year Old (Red Wine Cask Finish)
If Glendronach was all about balance, Tullibardine’s red wine cask finish is about bold character. Finished in vibrant wine casks, it delivers a nostalgic nod to rhubarb and custard sweets before diving into tangy, tannic richness and ending the a peaty punch in the face.
Nose: A wave of rhubarb, sharp yet sweet, reminiscent of old-school sweet shops.
Palate: Immediate rhubarb again, layered with fruity dryness, rich tannins, mulled wine spice, and a pleasant acidity and bonfire smokiness.
Finish: A gentle warmth with rhubarb returning, surprising sharpness, and a soft, tingling note of black liquorice and soothing dark treacle peat.
If you enjoy wine-finished whiskies, this one’s a must-try — tart, playful, and full of unexpected twists. A very enjoyable dram and a rarity to try with only 250 bottles available. 93/100

Murray McDavid – Glen Elgin “Smoke & Citrus”
Here’s a curious Speyside treat: Glen Elgin spirit, normally fruity and unpeated, finished in a cask that previously held peated Islay whisky. The result? That classic Glen Elgin orchard sweetness is infused with a savoury, smoky edge — a marriage of Speyside sunshine and Islay bonfire.
Nose: Juicy citrus, candied ginger, coastal smoke, and wood char.
Palate: Blueberries and sweet malt give way to smouldering bonfire smoke.
Finish: Charred lemon peel, runny honey, and sweet smoke lingering on.
This one’s a real conversation starter — familiar Speyside fruit dressed up in smoky Islay clothing – it isn’t too overpowering, has the sweetness of a classic Speyside with that hint of Islay. Not only does this taste great but also has a very appealing price tage of around £28 a bottle. A real bargain for any peat lover. 91/100
Final Thoughts
This month’s lineup is all about contrasts:
Glendronach brings refined smoke with sherried depth.
Tullibardine delivers tart, sweet shop nostalgia with a wine-soaked peated twist.
Glen Elgin surprises by wearing a smoky Islay jacket over its Speyside core.
Whether you’re sipping for comfort, curiosity, or conversation, there’s something in this selection to spark your palate and your imagination.
Slàinte!
