Table Whisky
Table Whisky is a single grain Scotch bottled by Port of Leith Distillery. It's a blend of whisky from Edinburgh neighbours North British, comprised of two-thirds virgin oak matured and one-third sherry cask. The owner, unsurprisingly, has a background in the wine industry – and wanted to create a whisky version of table wine, something that can sit on the table, has a smooth texture to it, easily drinkable and reasonably priced.
Nose – Werthers originals, apple crumble and light levels of cinnamon
Palate - freshly baked gingerbread men, toffee popcorn, vanilla, oak spice, and pepper.
Finish - short, creamy, moreish
Bottle looks good on the table… tick; smooth texture… tick; easily drinkable… tick; reasonably priced… tick. This does exactly what it says and easy drinker. Will be interesting to see what they create in the future. 89/100
Signatory 100proof 13yr (M)
This “secret Speysider” (if you don’t know by now that the (M) stands for Macallan then what rock have you been hiding under?) joins Signatory's 100 Proof Editions, with a hearty ABV of 57.1%. Distilled in 2011, the single malt matured for 13 years in a host of first-fill oloroso sherry butts until it was bottled in 2024.
Nose – Raisins, stewed plums, red win poached pears, cinnamon and nutmeg
Palate – strong alcohol flavour, toffee, cranberry sauce, burnt treacle, dark brown sugar.
Finish – long, sticky, leaves a waxy feeling in your mouth (reminds me of a strong sherried Deanston)
Normally I love a whisky that has a high abv; this is one that is full of punch at that high percentage, however a couple of drops of water really opens this one up (and if you have been following for a long time I am not usually one for adding ice or water) but it helps with this one. Its good, its full of flavour and for a 13 yr old Macallan it’s a great price. 90/100
Epicurean Glasgow edition Cuvee Cask finish
Douglas Laing's esteemed Epicurean is back for a second special Glasgow Edition, limited to just 5100 bottles worldwide. For this expression, the impressive blend of Lowland single malts has been treated to a finish in cuvée wine casks, imparting waves of crisp citrus and floral vanilla to the fruity, nutty malt at its core.
Nose Sweet, malted milk biscuits, oak, vanilla
Palate Fresh apples and pears are joined by zesty lemon peels, more of that malted milk biscuit flavour, and Battenberg cake, pistachio nuts
Finish Vibrant barley and creamy vanilla linger, with elegant spices and toasted oak
This is a lovely blend, easy to drink, vibrant and full of character, a charming yet different blend with the cuvee influence. 88/100
