In the current climate; bills increasing; grocery shop increasing; cost of whisky increasing; however, embarking on a quest to explore the world of whisky need not be an expensive endeavour. Contrary to popular belief, exceptional quality can often be found at modest price points. Today, we'll journey through a carefully curated selection of what I believe to currently be the top five whiskies under £40, each promising an unforgettable tasting experience without breaking the bank. Clicking on their names takes you to where I found them for the stated prices (prices are only accurate from when I wrote this so may change over time). In order to be on the list I set out some parameters: Must be able to find online for £40 or under, must be a core range bottling so no single cask or limited release bottles were included in the list (one for another time). SO lets get started:
5. Sexton Single Malt (£28): Starting our countdown is the Sexton Single Malt, hailing from the picturesque landscape of County Antrim in Northern Ireland. Triple distilled in copper pot stills and left to mature solely in Oloroso sherry casks. This whisky offers a harmonious blend of sweet dried fruits, dark chocolate, and a hint of spice. Elegant yet approachable, the Sexton Single Malt is sure to captivate the senses. Not just that but the bottle makes it look fancier that the price suggests. Great start to this countdown.
4. Ledaig 10 (£40): This one just comes into the sub £40 category but may need some shopping around to find it. Situated on the Isle of Mull, the Tobermory Distillery produces the bold and distinctive Ledaig 10-year-old whisky. Peated to perfection, this expression showcases the island's rugged terroir with its smoky aroma and briny undertones. A true delight for lovers of peated whisky seeking depth and complexity.
3. Glen Scotia Double Cask (£40): From the shores of Campbeltown comes the Glen Scotia Double Cask, a whisky that exemplifies the region's rich distilling heritage. Finished in a combination of first-fill bourbon and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, this expression offers a symphony of flavours ranging from caramelized fruits to gentle spices, culminating in a satisfyingly smooth finish. Winning 7 whisky world awards over the years, and just within budget.
2. Deanston Virgin Oak (£27): Crafted at the Deanston Distillery nestled along the banks of the River Teith, the Deanston Virgin Oak whisky exudes warmth and character. Matured in virgin oak barrels, this whisky boasts a creamy texture and notes of honey, citrus, and spice., with a moreish waxy chewy finish. Perfect for sipping by the fireside on a chilly evening. This is currently £27 at Waitrose on offer - which is a fantastic price - usually around the £35 mark elsewhere.
1. That Boutiqu-ey Whisky Company Canadian Corn 8 yr old (£36): My current number 1 whisky is this little gem from That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Their Canadian Corn 8-year-old whisky offers a unique twist, showcasing the characteristically sweet and mellow flavours of corn based whisky matured in sherry casks. Imparting its rich, complex profile and hints of vanilla and oak, with fruity summer berries, molasses and chewy texture. This whisky is a delightful addition to any drinking collection.
From the smooth sweetness of Canadian Corn to the peaty depths of Ledaig, each of these whiskies offers a unique glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship of the distiller's trade. So, whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or an adventurous newcomer, be sure to explore these top five whiskies under £40 and savor the experience without breaking the bank. Cheers to good taste and great value!
