March 2023 - Lagavulin, Mortlach & Benrinnes

Updated: Apr 1, 2023

It wasn't easy to decide what to have for our first month of drams but with a limited budget this is what I was able to get my hands on: enjoy!

Lagavulin 11 year Old Offerman Edition 3 - Charred Oak

This is the 3rd installment of the Offerman series at Lagavulin - Nick Offerman for those that don't know, plays a character in a great American tv show called 'Parks and Recreation' who loves Lagavulin whisky and was given the opportunity to invest into the company and took it with both hands. This installment is called 'charred oak' and if you don't get hit by the charred smokiness of this when you open the bottle you will definitely be hit by it on the taste. With true Lagavulin style, this smokey dram is perfect end of the night whisky (note if you drink these drams in one night I would leave this one til last). This 11 year old Single malt Scotch Whisky has been aged in heavily charred ex-bourbon and ex-red wine casks creating the perfect whisky to accompany any medium-rare steak. With hints of vanilla, red berries, sea salt brine and Lagavulin’s signature smore, this whisky not only shines on its own, but highlights and accentuates those perfect steak flavours.

Mortlach 14 Alexanders Way (Travel Exclusive)

With the name of this release coming from the nickname of the former owner - its not the name of the street or road where the distillery is based - the "way" refers to the method in which the distillery distils 2.81 times. This release is a travel exclusive and for the price at duty free in airports, it is an absolute bargain. With sweet tastes of apple pie and christmas cake it has plenty of spice on the nose and palate with the sweetness from the sherry casks. This expression has been matured for 14 years in refill bourbon and sherry casks. A very warming dram perfect for those winter nights and goes down great with a slice of fruitcake. If you enjoy this and are travelling through a duty free, keep your eye out - or if know a friend who is travelling be cheeky and get them to get it for you.

Benrinnes 15 (flora and fauna)

This is a great dram, and for its age and taste is a great price from most whisky shops and websites. This bottling was made by Diageo as part of their flora and fauna range. This dram provides plenty of floral night with sweet spice throughout the nose and palate. This is a great every drinker, a good all round whisky and very moreish.
